Fine needle aspiration cytology is a well accepted procedure for both the diagnosis and manegement of the breast masses. During the period from January 1991 to December 1992 at the Department of Surgery, Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital, the
authors
performed 478 fine needle aspiration cytology of the breast masses among which 166 cases were histologically examined.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) Comparison between the results of the fine needle aspiration cytology and the histologic findings revealed that fine needle aspiration cytology had a sensitivity 95.55%, a specificity of a 99.17%, a false negative rate of 4.44%, a false
positive
rate of 0.08%, a positive predictive value 97.72%, a negative predicitive value 98.36% and an overall diagnostic accuracy of 98.19%.
2) In order to determine histological special types of fine needle aspiration cytology on breast carcinoma, we retrospectively studied 30 cases of breast carcinomas diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology with subsequent histologic
confirmation.
The predictive value with the histology was 93.33%.
3) In order to determined the accuracy of Black's nuclear grading of fine needle aspiration cytology on breast carcinoma, we retrospectively studied 22 cases of infiltrating ductal carcinomas diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology with
subsequent
histology confirmation. The predictive value with the histology was 86.36%.
This results of show that fine needle aspiration cytology of the breast masses is a accurate diagnostic method. This results also suggestive that the evaluation of nuclear grading and histological special type of fine needle aspiration cytology
can
predict clinical outcome and decide the was of managenent of breast cancer.
